| Frequently
Asked Questions
Why should I invest
in kiteboarding lessons?
Learning how to kiteboard without lessons can be very
dangerous. Beginners always underestimate the power of the kite
and dangerous situations occur within seconds.
With our lessons you will get a taste of kiteboarding and can
make an educated decision on whether or not you really want
to get into the sport. You will progress much faster and enjoy
the thrill rather than taking a beating.
We will help you in selecting the best gear for you - new or
used, from us or our competition, we will give you our honest
opinion.
How
quickly can I learn kitesurfing?
If you know how to fly a trainer
kite with your eyes closed and are good on a wakeboard or
snowboard, you know the basics and should be up and going within
one to two lessons. If you do not have any board experience
it might take a bit longer. However, if you do not know how
to fly a trainer kite, we will not
take you into the water during your first lesson. So save some
money and learn how to fly a kite.
How
much will it cost?
$100 for a one hour private lesson. This includes 2 instructors,
boat support and all equipment (kite, board,
harness, helmet, impact vest, wetsuit and safety vest for vessel).
You will be in the water for at least one full hour.
How
fast can I get a kiteboarding lesson?
Unfortunately this is not up to us. We need
wind - ideally between 10-25knots. If there is wind we are available
7 days a week from sunrise to sunset and we will get you going
quickly. If there is no wind you will have to be patient.
Where
do you teach kiteboarding?
We
teach in the area of Tauranga, New Zealand. However, if you
get a few friends together for lessons, we will come with our
gear and vessel to your local spot. Please contact us for further
information.
I
know how to surf, wakeboard or snowboard - does this help?
By
being a good surfer you prove to be a coordinated athlete. However,
the ability to surf will not help you to learn kiteboarding
faster. What will help are any snowboarding or wakeboarding
skills. Any experience in sailing will help you to understand
the wind. Most importantly, if you know how to fly a two-line
kite, you will have a huge advantage.
What
lessons do you offer?
We
are offering lessons for beginner, intermediate and advanced
kiteboarders. Outlined below is our most popular one-hour beginner
programme.
Beginner
Programme
Most
importantly you need to know how to fly a two-line
kite or we will not take you out on the water.
During
your first kitesurfing lesson, you start out learning how to
correctly setup the kite and will practice flying in and out
of the power zone, launching and landing while in the water.
Next
we will teach you the technique of dragging yourself upwind
- an essential skill in the sport since you will always have
to be able to retrieve your board after a fall. Next step is
re-launching the kite from the water and self-rescue skills.
Now
you are ready for the waterstart! You won’t believe how
quickly you will be up on the board and going. We will always
be close with our safety boat and you can concentrate on our
coaching. You probably won’t be able to stay up wind at
first and quickly loose a lot of ground. But don’t worry,
we have the boat for your ride back and you will actually spend
the hour cruising downwind and not walking back upwind.
How
good is the equipment?
We
only use state of the art kites and boards. The kites are very
stable, re-launch very easily and are super safe. The boards
are wide and plane up very quickly and are ideal to learn on
or to use as light wind boards.
Is
kiteboarding safe?
There
is always some risk involved in extreme sports. However, by
using state of the art equipment and teaching with the safety
boat, we minimise the dangers and create a safe learning environment.
How
young is too young and how old is too old?
You
are never too old to start kiteboarding. If your mind can do
it - you can do it. How young is too young? This depends on
your child but with 10 years of age you are definitely ready
to rip.
What
should I bring?
Bring
your wetsuit - if you have one - and sun block. That's it. If
you do not own a wetsuit, don't worry - we have got some. |
